A History of the Live Oak Drama Guild
The golden age of Live Oak Drama began in 1974 under the direction of Bill Klipstine (now retired). Under the combined efforts of both Klipstine and a proud lineage of student leaders, the Guild earned repeated recognition from American Musical Theater’s Honors program. Acting acclaim for individual students accompanied additional honors for the Guild’s productions, including Fiddler on the Roof (Scenic Design- 1995), Little Shop of Horrors (Best Show- 1988), Little Shop (Puppet Design- 1996), Fiddler (Best Lighting Design- 2002) and Best Orchestra (various productions- 1999, 2002, 2006). Students also received recognition at the state level of the International Thespian Society, which inducted Klipstine into the Thespian Hall of Fame in 2007.
Andrew Cummings teaches Theater and English at Live Oak and is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Department of Theater and Performance Studies. He is also a Live Oak alumnus and, in his ample spare time, a scenic designer for a variety of bay area theater companies.
Janell Cummings is a regular director in the South Valley Civic Theater season, where she recently won Best Director for Thoroughly Modern Millie. She also served as the director of the Nordstrom Elementary Theater program in its heyday.
Live Oak Drama is delighted to host a passionate new team of leaders who have made significant progress towards reestablishing the Drama Guild as a pillar of quality entertainment and instruction in the community. Yoana Ware, Andrew Cummings, and Janell Cummings are happy to lend their combined expertise to the organization, and are pleased to announce the inaugural Second Season of workshop and social events, development of the newly reinstated Historian and Development Officer positions, launch of the brand-new Live Oak Drama website and social media campaign, and ongoing development of the new Live Oak Drama Handbook and online resource library. Stay tuned for more great shows and new inspiration from LODG!
